Intro to SUP

The Intro to SUP Board Award aims to enable participants to:

  • Paddle safely and competently on a SUP board on sheltered flat water as part of a group being led.
  • Assist in basic flat water rescues.
  • Appreciation of the effects of wind & tide.

Course Content:

  1. An understanding of the Basic Safety Rules of Paddle Sports.
  2. An understanding of the correct & appropriate use of leash.
  3. An ability to Mount and Dismount a SUP Board correctly from the bank.
  4. Forward Paddle (With hands & paddle), Reverse Paddle, and Stop.
  5. An ability to turn while stationary using Forward Sweep Stroke, Reverse Sweep Stroke.
  6. A water based dismount from the SUP Board.
  7. Participate in a rescue following a Flip, including righting the SUP Board and completing a water based assisted remount.

Flat Water SUP Skills award

The SUP Boarding Flat Water SUP Skills Award aims to enable participants to:

  • Paddle safely and competently on a SUP on sheltered flat water.
  • Perform basic flat water rescues.
  • Obtain & Understand relevant weather and tidal information.

Course Content:

  1. An understanding of the Basic Safety Rules of Paddle Sports.
  2. An understanding of the correct use of SUP board leash and hazards associated with its use and non-use.
  3. An ability to Mount and Dismount a SUP Board correctly from the bank & water.
  4. Forward Paddle, Reverse Paddle, and Stop.
  5. An ability to turn while stationary using Forward Sweep Stroke, Reverse Sweep Stroke. Board trim should be adjusted to suit turns.
  6. An ability to turn efficiently on the move i.e., Sweeps, Bow Draw, Cross Bow Draw, Step back pivot turn.
  7. Draw Strokes (simple draw & sculling draw).
  8. Bracing.
  9. Stern rudder.
  10. Balance and Board Trim.
  11. A water based dismount, righting and remount of SUP board.
  12. Rescue an unconscious paddler from the water and transport them to the bank.
  13. Obtain, understand and be able to translate a weather forecast and tidal information to the area you will be SUPing.
