Stand Up Paddle Boarding is a traditional Hawaiian sport that’s the closest thing to walking on water you’ll possibly experience. It has many benefits and promotes balance, strength and fitness. We’ve been running this watersport for two years and while we think there’s loads of reasons why to try it – here are our top 6 reasons to try SUPing!

1. You pick your own pace!

Unlike extreme sports like canyoning, where you know you have to work hard and embrace the adrenaline fuelled moments before you embark (which is equally as great!), SUPing is different. Want to relax? Just paddle that bit slower – take in the stunning sights and sounds around you and see what wildlife you can spot! Feeling that bit more energetic? SUPing caters for that too! You can race your friend or even push your body even further by surfing if there’s a swell! Basically, it’s great for those of you who don’t know what to expect and don’t want to commit to anything before they hit the water.

2. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to walking on water!

How great would it be to be able to say that you walked on water? While this technically isn’t possible, Stand Up Paddle Boarding is the closest you’ll get to doing it! All that’s between you and the ocean is a board, and you’re standing up.. Soooo, you walked on water – right? *ahem*.

3. You’ll get to discover secret places!

SUPing offers you a way to get to places that average swimmers can’t, you’ll not only discover new places but because you’re standing on a board you’ll actually get to observe more than you would if you were swimming in the water – this video of our instructor Ronan Paddle Boarding with sharks is a prime example of that!

4. It’s suitable for beginners.

Have you mastered walking? Great, then you can master SUPing! During your 2 hour session at Ardmore Adventures, you’ll can choose to start by kneeling on your board on your rather than your feet to ease you in if you. You’ll then stand and make your way to the boat cove – there the instructor will bring you through some great tips for balance and other skills. Unlike kayaking, it’s pretty certain that you will fall in, but don’t worry our buoyancy ensure that you float and you’ll be back on your board in a minute or two!

5. Paddling for health.

SUPing is great for fitness, you’ll get toned arms and a strong core from all that paddling through the water for a start! The session is two hours long so it works as a good cardio session too and the constant paddling improves your endurance. It also helps improve your overall strength.

6. You can connect with nature.

Being on the water is proven to be calming and connecting with nature can have a positive effect on your mental health. Also, if the Irish sun makes a rare appearance you’ll get to soak up some vitamin D – bonus!
